THIRD TIME’S A CHARM

If you need further proof that failure isn’t fatal, consider the story of Peter, who was one of the twelve disciples chosen by Jesus to bear witness to His ministry and help spread His message on earth. But even though Peter was a devoted disciple, he was also a deeply flawed human being who often let his emotions get the best of him.

The Gospels tell us that Peter worked as a fisherman, but he was hardly what you would call a quiet, solitary figure. Outspoken, rash, and impetuous, Peter frequently challenged Jesus and was actually scolded by Him multiple times: first for trying, along with the other disciples, to shoo children away from him while he was preaching (see Mark 10:13-15), again for not allowing Jesus to wash his feet (see John 13:3-8), a third time for falling asleep in the garden of Gethsemane while Jesus prayed (see Matthew 26:40-41), and then finally for rashly cutting off a soldier’s ear during Jesus’ arrest (see John 18:10-11). Jesus even called Peter Satan at one point when Peter suggested that Jesus didn’t really need to die: “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s” (Matthew 16:23).

And of course, there was the time when Peter tried to walk on water:

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

“Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
